Sun Yat-Sen was the founder and leader of the Republic of China- this was the democratic government established in China prior to the Communist Revolution. After Sun Yet-Sen's death Chairman Mao led the Communist Revolution and expelled Sun Yat-Sen's right hand man- Chiang Kai Shek to Taiwan. Both China's Communist party and Taiwan's Nationalist party view him as the father of their countries. There's your history lesson for the day.
The monument with the guards doing a half hour change of the guard - very proper.
Asian people don't build small monuments.
